Frontier Chemistry Project

It is important to identify a plant or root correctly because if someone tries to treat their illness with a plant, but uses the wrong plant, then their illness will not be cured. There might even be adverse effects, including but not limited to diarrhea, rashes, and death. For example, if someone is trying to treat their stomachache by drinking some root tea of a plant with healing properties, but they use the wrong plant in the tee, then their stomachache might get worse, or they might die from ingesting poisonous material if the plant is toxic.

It is important to know about a variety of plant species from many different regions because you never know where you might be when you are in need of some healing plant remedies. Say you live in an eastern deciduous forest, but decide to go hiking through a tall grass prairie with some friends. Maybe you are struck with a sudden illness that turns out to be malaria, and you collapse, near death. Now your survival depends on your knowledge of plants from a tall grass prairie, not an eastern deciduous forest. If you were wise enough to study up on plants from a variety of ecosystems, including tall grass prairie, you would be fortunate enough to survive. If you neglected to research other areas' vegetation, consider yourself dead.

It would make a major difference if you were traveling in different seasons, though. This is because different plants bloom at different times, and if the flower part of the plant is needed to treat some malady, it may or may not be found, depending on the season. If the root or leaf of the plant is needed, though, as they usually are, then the season would not make too much difference. But if it is wintertime, many of these plants are not able to be found, for it is too cold for them to survive.

If you can form a relationship with local peoples, then they will divulge more information about local treatments and remedies derived from plants. That will increase the amount of information you know about plants. Some information, such as exactly where some of the less common plants may be found, is only known to locals.

If I was found injured or disease-ridden without traditional medicines, I would trust a reference text's knowledge of local flora to treat my illness or disease because I would simply have no other option. Also, plant-derived treatments tend to not have the negative side effects of modern drugs.
